You can purchase pre-made, ready-to-go drapery panels at many big-box retailers, so why should you go with custom drapes? When you work with us, you get personalized services that major retailers can’t offer. You won’t have to customize on style or quality, and your drapes and top treatments will be measured to the specifications of your window, and not the standard size used by chain stores.

Things to Know: Valances

The first thing you need to know is that valances are very much in style. The designs have come a long way from the days of the balloon-style valances that were found in nearly every home. The primary function of a valance is to conceal hardware, but the right top treatment can add dimension to your window and create a visually appealing layered look.

You can also soften a room that seems unwelcoming or too harsh with a lot of metal or stone features. If you love your window trim and don’t want it covered, we can simply use an inside mount. A valance can also create a cohesive look within a space. You can draw from bold accent colors in a room and feature those on your drapes and top treatments. This will create color continuity without having too many instances of a very vivid hue.

Do I Need Drapes or Curtains?

While the two words are often used interchangeably, drapes and curtains are not the same exact thing. Drapery tends to be made of thicker, more luxurious fabric and is seen in more formal settings of a home. Curtains are made using lighter-weight fabrics and can be incorporated into any space of your home. The length of drapery and curtains is also different. Curtains usually break at the bottom of, or just below, the window. Drapery either rests on the floor, known as “puddling”, or breaks less than an inch above the floor.

Regardless of your window covering choice, there are some rules to know when it comes to hanging your window treatments. A common misconception is to hang the rod just above the window frame, but this is a significant design faux pas. You want your hardware to be mounted at least 6 inches above the window frame to give the illusion of higher ceilings and a more spacious room. The panels should also be twice the width of the window, so they don’t obstruct your view of the outdoors when pulled back.
