Vertical vs Horizontal

Both Vertical and Horizontal blinds provide privacy and allow you to control the amount of light that comes into a room. They both allow you to close them completely and black out the level of light, completely blocking any view from outside or inside. Although they both have similar benefits they each have different ideal applications.

Positioning

Positioning is a key factor in deciding which type of blinds to use. You will want to look at what and where the window to be covered is facing. If the window is facing the north or the south, horizontal blinds are typically used. If the window is facing the east or west then many designers choose to use vertical blinds. The positioning of the slats on each particular blind and the angle that the sunlight enters the room dictates the light filtering capability of each type of blind.

If your window is large, vertical blinds are a better choice over horizontal blinds. For instance, vertical blinds on patio, porch or balcony sliding glass doors allow you to filter light and still allow people to enter or leave your home easily. When closed they can filter or completely block light, but when pulled to the side will allow traffic to enter and leave.

If privacy is your main concern, then vertical blinds are probably a better choice. They provide an excellent light barrier and privacy panel when completely closed. When paired with drapes or curtains they allow you to close off the room from the outside altogether. These blinds are a great option for living rooms and bedrooms.

Other Considerations

When installing any window treatments there are many things to consider. One thing to think about is that it can be difficult to clean blinds; therefore you need to think about that when installing them. It is important to continually clean your blinds on a regular basis to make sure they perform optimally. They can be cleaned regularly with a duster or vacuum.

Blinds are made from a variety of materials; however, aluminum is very popular because of its low cost and durability. Vinyl is another popular material which is very light and allows easier lift as well as durability. Wood blinds are very beautiful and add a sense of elegance to any room.

Also, when installing blinds, you should be mindful of safety, especially if you have children or pets in the home. Cords on blinds present a hazard, be sure to keep them up and out of the way.

No matter what your home project, our professionals at House To A Home Interiors can help you through the process. From start to finish, we can help you with all of your window treatment decisions ensuring that your vision becomes a reality.
